The Empower Girls Program, based in Oakland, began in response to an increasing trend in school absences among underserved students in the area. The founder of the program, Lutillian Maxon, discovered that many of the reasons behind these absences were self-esteem related. Since the program has made a stalwart effort to assist students on this front and many others.

Since 2023, Nor-Cal FDC has collaborated with the Empower Girls Mentoring Program and Showin’ Out Hair Gallery to support their effort in improving confidence, self-esteem, and school attendance among underserved students. Nor-Cal FDC has sponsored essential hair services, cost-effective hair maintenance education, and self-esteem workshops to uplift these youth. Seeing the smiling faces of the youth benefitting from Empower Girls’ work has been a high note for many of our staff, who have attended and co-led Empower Girls events. We continue to support the program’s initiatives to this day.
